Schlapp is keeping her eyes on the target, and has been coordinating policies with White House staff from the Political and Legislative Affairs team and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. The focus has been on matters such as school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. As of now the director does not interact extensively with journalists. But she drew a burst of attention in March after her name was suggested as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It has been a battle that has been brutal. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as another candidate for the position who is also named Tony began fighting on the news. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when the Washington Examiner printed a bad story on him.
